3-step simple relaxation technique

It is often hard to find relief from the stress of work and home life. We all experience stress, in some form and at some level, every single day of our lives. This simple 3-step relaxation technique has been developed to relax you after a stressful day at home or at work.

This technique will benefit anyone who can find a peaceful place. Use it to bring serenity and promote a truly relaxed mood after a stressful day. Please follow the three steps:

1) Find a near silent place where you will not be disturbed. Stretching will help to get rid of tension in your body. Either sit down or lie down – whichever is more practical or makes you feel more comfortable.

2) Start to alter your breathing pattern: take long, calm but deep breaths. This will slow heart rate and relax you straight away. Think of every part of your body in turn and imagine that part as light as a feather and entirely relaxed.

3) Concentrate only on the technique. Picture your worldly concerns flying off and vanishing in the distance. Clear your mind of all thoughts. This can be difficult to do without practice. One way is to imagine a heavenly, calm location. Somewhere you feel at peace. Alternatively, think of a word that you find relaxing or a time when you felt at peace with yourself and everything around you.

After 15 to 20 minutes, you should end the technique by taking deep breaths and by opening your eyes. Do not attempt to move for a moment or two to steady yourself from the technique and avoid feeling dizzy..

This technique is a great way to wind down after a busy day. An alternative or complement to a long soak in the bath, a walk in the park or your favourite, relaxing music. By making a small amount of time available to yourself for relaxation you can reduce the effect that stress has on your life. However, if stress continues to be a problem or you are having difficulty dealing with the pressure then you need to ask for help. Talking to friends and relatives can often be helpful but if you need more help, please consult your doctor.
